Getting to know me
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to my classroom!! My name is Sharill Suyapa Funez Cortez and I am genuinely excited to be teaching at Great Oak another year. I have been teaching 11 years and every year becomes more and more exciting. I am always looking forward to incorporating new strategies and concepts as I realize that my duty as a teacher is to always serve the needs of each individual student. To further my practice and craft as an educator, I make it a personal goal to immerse myself in readings such as Authentic Assessment for English Language Learners, Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope, Reinventing Paulo Freire, and The First Days of School, just to name a few. Each book is unique in style, yet promotes the same idea, "teach and love students." This will certainly remain my mantra and philosophy for every school year.
Some silly and true things to know about me: I am super clumsy. I am always tripping on my feet and dropping things everywhere. Sometimes I'm picking one thing up and something else falls out. Yes, like in the movies. I can watch "The Notebook" a million times and still cry. It's quite ridiculous. I loooove to laugh. I am happy and outgoing. I can have the worst day and be going through the hardest of times, but I tend to keep a smile on my face. If I can paint my house over and over again I would because I like the smell of paint. My favorite colors are light purple and pastel green. I have three dogs, Clinton, Cooper, and Charlie. I will NEVER watch scary movies as I will have nightmares forever and ever. I hate the dark. I am NOT superstitious. I am only 5 feet tall. I was born here, but my parents are from Honduras.
My family: I have been married for 17 years to to a wonderful man, Edwin. I have two children, Khristopher 18; and Marriana 14. I loooove spending as much time as possible with the three of them whether it's simply being at home, camping, vacationing as a family, visiting our friends, or riding bikes. I cannot believe how fast time goes by thus I cherish every moment with all of them.
I encourage, promote, and welcome parent and student communication. Please feel free to communicate via email, at school, make an appointment, drop in to visit our classroom, or call me at (951) 240-6450 extension 3304.
Best wishes J
