THE DATE FOR THE FIRST AP READINESS WORKSHOP IS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2017

TRIP SLIPS ARE DUE BY SEPTEMBER 8, 2017

FLYER, TRIP SLIP AND LINK ATTACHED

Last year GOHS students attended the AP Readiness program at UCR in order to receive supplemental, supportive instruction in their respective AP/IB courses.

The intent of the workshops is to provide instructional support to AP and IB students in STEM courses such as:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Env. Science and Physics
  • Calculus, Statistics, Computer Science Principles
  • English Language and English Literature

The workshops run one Saturday each month leading up to the AP exams.  They are all different, and they are organized to match the curricular development in each subject.

A student may go to just one, a few, or all eight workshops.  A student who attends all of them would receive 32 additional instructional support hours - FREE OF CHARGE.

The district provides busing for students, although students can also just show up to UCR.  The process is:

Step One:

Student must register for workshop.  Here is the lnk.  http://www.apr.ucr.edu  Once a student registers for the first one, he/she doesn't need to register again this year.

Step Two:

If student wishes to ride the bus, he/she downloads the trip slip attached, fills it out, and returns it to his or her AP teacher, or to Mrs. Treto in the SPIRIT center.  Students may also get themselves to UCR as long as they arrive no later than 8:45 a.m.  They must be picked up in this case  at 2:00 p.m.

PLEASE REGISTER ASAP SO CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE

For more information please contact January King at jking@tvusd.k12.ca.us or Deeann Treto at dtreto@tvusd.k12.ca.us

Last year 11th and 12th grade students were invited to apply for NHS if they had a 3.6 cumulative GPA.  However, we know that some students may have risen to a 3.6 as a result of the second semester of 10th grade. It is also possible that a new student has entered GOHS as an 11th or 12th grader with a 3.6 cumulative GPA. In this case, you would not have received a letter last year, but should this year.

If you did NOT receive an NHS invitation letter last year and believe you should have, please see Mrs. King in the SPIRIT center or Mrs. Casady in Room 306 immediately. We can confirm if this is the case, give you the letter of invitation, and then you can complete the application.

If you have any questions, please stop by and see us when you can!

There will be a meeting in the PAC on Wednesday, May 3rd for any prospective NHS applicants.  In order to apply, students must achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher; students that meet this criteria were sent a letter on Friday, April 28.  If you feel that you should have received a letter and did not, please see your English teacher and if they do not have one, then proceed to see Mrs. Casasdy in room 306.

The meeting on May 3rd will address the four pillars of NHS and the application process.  If you plan on applying, please attend this informative meeting!

If you are interested in this opportunity, please let me know that you can commit and I will add your information to the list.

The Temecula Valley Woman’s Club’s 32nd Annual Holiday Home Tour will be held this year on Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th in La Cresta in Murrieta.

We have had student volunteers from Great Oak High School help us each year and we would appreciate their help again this year.  The students will receive community service hours.  I have attached information and a sign-up sheet.  Please let me know if you are willing to present this to your  IB/NHS students.

The sign-up sheet, once completed, can be e-mailed to me or I can pick it up.  Student volunteers play an important part in the success of our fundraising event.  Many local non-profits benefit from the funds raised, and we have proudly supported our local high schools with scholarships every year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail, call, text or meet with me.  Thank you!
