AVID 9

This is a program which prepares students for admission to four year universities and colleges immediately after high school graduation. Students receive instruction in writing, reading, and study skills, intensive college and career counseling and in-class tutoring from college students in all subject areas. Students who enroll in the class are expected to maintain enrollment in AVID for the remainder of their high school career and to maintain enrollment in college preparatory classes.

While all four years in the GOHS AVID program will dedicate a significant amount of time to College Research, College Exam Practice, and all WICOR strategies and activities, there is a grade level emphasis designed to provide focus for the student at each grade level.

In AVID 9, students can expect a heavy emphasis on organization and note-taking strategies, skills, and habits. This year aims to solidify student’s work habits, habits of mind, and the use of goal setting for academic success.

AVID 10

This is a program which prepares students for admission to four year universities and colleges immediately after high school graduation. Students receive instruction in writing, reading, and study skills, intensive college and career counseling and in-class tutoring from college students in all subject areas. Students who enroll in the class are expected to maintain enrollment in AVID for the remainder of their high school career and to maintain enrollment in college preparatory classes.

While all four years in the GOHS AVID program will dedicate a significant amount of time to College Research, College Exam Practice, and all WICOR strategies and activities, there is a grade level emphasis designed to provide focus for the student at each grade level.

In AVID 10, students can expect to continue the use of items learned in grade nine, but have emphasis on time management, especially as it relates to attacking college level coursework (AP Courses). Additionally, students can expect to heavily develop skills of collaboration and inquiry. To this end, students will receive intense instruction in the area of the tutorial process, including the appropriate use of tutorial request form to demonstrate high order thinking skills, inquiry and problem solving needed for university-level work.

AVID 11

This is a program which prepares students for admission to four-year universities and colleges immediately after high school graduation. Students receive instruction in writing, reading, and study skills, intensive college and career counseling and in-class tutoring from college students in all subject areas. SAT/ACT practice is also a part of this course. Students who enroll in the class are expected to maintain enrollment in AVID for the remainder of their high school career and to maintain enrollment in college preparatory classes.

In AVID 11, students can expect to continue the use of items learned in grades nine and ten, but will engage in activities which further develop inquiry and higher level thinking skills.  Additionally, in grade 11 students will prepare a variety of materials needed to optimize their college applications and scholarship applications.

AVID Senior Seminar

A/B students take AVID 1st and 2nd semester and continue to receive support in preparation for admission to a four-year college or university. Critical thinking and study skills are continually emphasized, as well as tutorial assistance with the guidance of college tutors two days per week. Students will practice essay writing and speaking skills, as well as Socratic seminars. SAT/ACT practice is also a part of this course. Students in their 4th year of AVID should enroll in AVID Senior Seminar. College admission is emphasized through the application process, financial aid and scholarship research.

In AVID Senior Seminar, students can expect to continue to use items learned in grades nine-eleven, but will engage in activities which refine their understanding and materials needed for college applications and scholarship applications. GOHS AVID’s goal for 12th grade AVID students is that each student can apply for university with a maximized potential for college acceptance.

WRITING: AVID Center states, “Writing can serve as a record of one’s thinking or as a learning, public, and personal communication tool. Students who write consider their audience and purpose, engage in various writing processes to address specific situations, support their thinking, and demonstrate understanding. The AVID curriculum supports writing through the use of focused note-taking, learning logs, quickwrites and reflections, process writing, peer evaluation, and authentic writing.”

GOHS AVID students are required to implement a variety of learning through writing strategies. Almost everything an AVID student is asked to do culminates in a written requirement that is designed to help the student process their learning and thinking patterns through writing.

INQUIRY: AVID Center states, “Inquiry is uncovering one’s understanding; asking critical questions; and engaging in thinking, learning, and discussion. Students who inquire analyze and synthesize materials or ideas, clarify their own thinking, probe others’ thinking, and work through ambiguity. The AVID curriculum supports inquiry through the use of skilled questioning techniques, Costa’s Levels of Thinking, Socratic Seminars, tutorials, investigations, and guiding questions.”

GOHS AVID students are expected to ask questions of their own and their classmate’s coursework, their thinking patterns, their thinking processes and their understanding of content area knowledge.

COLLABORATION: AVID Center states, “Collaboration is teamwork with shared responsibility; sharing of ideas, information, and opinions; and formal and informal discussion. Students work together toward a common goal, develop positive interdependence, work in focused study groups, and support the learning of others through inquiry. The AVID curriculum supports collaboration through Socratic Seminars, tutorials, Philosophical Chairs, group activities and projects, peer editing groups, and service learning projects.”

GOHS AVID students are expected to work together to work through common challenges by analyzing thinking processes and patterns as well as approaches to learning difficult materials. Our most obvious collaborative structure is the Tutorials, experienced Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout most of the year. AVID students are expected to authentically prepare for and participate in Tutorials weekly.

ORGANIZATION: AVID Center states, “Organization is managing materials and practicing methodical study habits; planning and prioritizing school, work, and social tasks; engaging in mental preparation and goal-setting; and strategically and intentionally taking responsibility for one’s own learning. Students who organize develop and use processes, procedures, and tools to study effectively; manage their time through prioritizing and goal-setting; are prepared for courses; participate during instruction; interact with instructors; self-direct, self-evaluate, self-monitor, and self-advocate. The AVID curriculum supports organization through the use of binders and organizational tools, calendars, planners, agendas, graphic organizers, a focused note-taking system, tutorials and study groups, and project planning and SMART goals.”

GOHS AVID students are expected keep an organized binder to include a planner, homework, classwork, notes, and tools necessary for academic success. Students will also work on goal setting and time management strategies.  GOHS AVID aims to assist students in balancing academic, extracurricular, and personal demands of the student daily schedule.

READING: AVID Center states, “Reading is strategically gaining meaning, understanding, and knowledge from print and other media; purpose-driven; and interactive. Students who read understand text structures; apply prior knowledge; make connections to other texts, self, and the world; make predictions and ask questions; and create visual images as they read. The AVID curriculum supports reading through the use of deep reading strategies, note-taking, graphic organizers, vocabulary building, summarizing, and reciprocal teaching.”

GOHS AVID students are expected to engage in collegiate level texts inside and out of their content area courses.
