Career Technical Education (CTE)

Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways are programs of study that involve a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic content with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education and careers in fields such as engineering, culinary arts, digital media arts, health sciences and early childhood education.  According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, CTE programs currently serve more than 14 million students  nationwide (U.S. Dept. of Ed). At its core, the Career Technical Education mission is to prepare students for high-skill, high-demand careers and university programs. Many of these courses offer students the opportunity to earn free college credit and/or industry certifications. All CTE courses engage students in hands-on, interactive work-based learning that will help to prepare them for high skill, high wage, high demand careers.

AP Computer Science Principles

• Research and understanding of the internet, digital media, data and privacy.
• Networks and system organization
• Intro to programming, coding,  building apps
• Career exploration
• Independent and group performance tasks

Recommended: Pass Intro with C (75%)  or better both semesters.

AP Computer Science

Recommended: Pass Concentrator with C (75%)  or better both semesters.

CTE Developmental Psychology of Children

Articulated with MSJC

• This course looks at how humans grow and develop from birth through age 18.

CTE Early Childhood Studies

Articulated with Palomar

• B or better in concentrator
• This course offers an introduction to careers in education and the teaching profession.
• Students will spend time developing and implementing curriculum at local elementary schools. 

CTE Culinary 1

Articulated Course (MSJC)

Pass Intro with C (75%)  or better both semesters.

• Menu planning
• Cost planning
• Research of multiple subjects/projects
• Intricate work with knives 
• Personal hygiene.   
• Catering:  Food Prep for large crowds.  Proper food handling
• Teamwork and individual expectations

CTE Culinary Arts & Hospitality Mgt

Same as above plus the following:

• Must have completed Culinary Arts II with a B or higher 
• Collaborative group projects
• Meal and event planning, including hospitality components
• Marketing, staffing  and budgeting for event planning

CTE Intro to Engineering

Articulated Course (MSJC)

• Project Based, mostly in collaborative groups.
• Present orally in front of class, and small groups.
• Keep written track of ongoing project design process.
• Use of computer software (CAD, 3D modeling, coding)
• Arduino circuitry and robotics, with coding.
• Build prototypes using tools such as scissors, exacto knives, electric drills, protractors, wiring, circuits, architectural scales.
• Math skills (algebra 1) including measurement
• Technical drawing is interwoven throughout the course.

CTE Applied Engineering

Same as above plus the following:

• Pass Intro with C (75%)  or better semesters A and B.
• Possible for 9th if student took 1 year of advanced STEM in MS, got an A, and have 8th grade teacher's recommendation.
• Research and prototype design in each of the four areas of engineering studied. Mechanical, environmental, biomedical, and civil engineering.
• Hands-on projects with smaller technical research requirements.
• Tools such as multimeters, soldering irons, complex circuits, breadboards, arduinos and coding.  
• Extensive journaling throughout project development
• Design and build structures using power tools
• Work independently  from idea to prototype.
• Math Skills: Algebra 1, some algebra 2.

CTE Engineering Principles

• Pass Applied with B or better, 11th/12th only
• The first semester is an in-depth research project.  25-50 pages related to the development of engineering products/ processes in chosen engineering fields.
• Projects include development and building of prototypes, marketing, manufacturing and distribution of products or processes.  Extensive scientific research, including literature review.
• Project  presented to admin and industry partners.
• Second semester: work on standards of industry related smaller projects and apply for externship/ job shadow opportunities with our industry partners. 
• Reflective journal throughout the course.

Health/Emergency First Aid

• Students interested in this pathway will need to take Biology in 9th or 10th and should consider taking human anatomy (not required). Biology is a prerequisite for Human Anatomy.

CTE Kinesiology and Patient Care

11th-12th Grades

• This course provides students with foundational concepts in anatomy and physiology.  It integrates hands-on training in the Allied Health Professions such as sports medicine, nursing, physical therapy and emergency care. Coursework includes assessment and rehabilitation techniques for athletic injuries, emergency care procedures and medical terminology.  Upon completion, students will receive CPR Certification from the American Heart Association.

CTE Advanced Kinesiology

Pass with a B or better and application

• This course provides enrichment and the practical applications of the material introduced in  Kinesiology and Patient Care.  Students will utilize hands-on instruction to promote skill based learning and competencies needed in the Allied Health Profession field.  Students will receive instruction for Basic Life Support Certification

CTE Video Media Arts

Articulated Course (MSJC)

• Project-based learning, mostly in collaborative groups.
• Most projects are completed using software with supporting written materials.

CTE Advanced Video Media Arts

Articulated Course (Palomar)

Same as above plus the following:

• Pass Intro with C (75%)  or better both semesters.
• Individualized unit lesson projects, mostly as independent practice
• Work in collaborative groups and serve in individual roles to help produce weekly morning announcements WPTV episodes.

CTE Video Media Arts Capstone

Same as above plus the following:

• Advanced VMA with a B or better.
• Work in a collaborative group with PACKtron event production team for live sports and events in the stadium.
