Spanish 1 is an introduction to Spanish and focuses on the four key areas of world language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The primary purpose of the course is to prepare students to be college-ready, well-rounded global citizens who can communicate effectively in Spanish and are aware of the cultural influences of the Spanish and Latino heritage at home and abroad. Students in this course will learn Spanish phonemes and basic vocabulary including numbers, colors, and greetings. Students will be expected to master proper Spanish sentence constructions, articles and adjectives, subject-verb agreement, and regular and irregular verb conjugations. As part of the course, students will be provided opportunities to read, write, listen, and speak Spanish while they work towards becoming linguistically and culturally literate. This course includes a broad series of lessons and activities for ultimate student engagement and content retention. Lessons are designed to introduce content with repeated opportunities to practice that content, assessments in the form of oral and written practice, unit exams, and a final exam at the end of the course.

Spanish 2 builds upon knowledge gained in Spanish 1. This course will also reinforce the skills learned in Spanish I: listening, speaking, reading and writing.Instruction and practice will include reading, writing, speaking and listening in the target language. The class will be conducted in Spanish. Emphasis is on perfecting pronunciation, mastery of the basic grammatical structures, and increased communicative proficiency. Acquisition of functional vocabulary is expected. Students will be exposed to the past tenses, future, conditional and subjunctive mood. Students will be expected to apply them in their writing and speaking. This course includes a broad series of lessons and activities for ultimate student engagement and content retention. Lessons are designed to introduce content with repeated opportunities to practice that content, assessments in the form of oral and written practice, unit exams, and a final exam at the end of the course.

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).

This Introductory, college preparatory course develops beginning language skills in French. French 1 focuses on the key areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Each lesson introduces new vocabulary and grammar concepts through listening comprehension, speaking, and writing activities. Students learn to talk about themselves and others, describe their surroundings and use numbers for dates and time. Regular verbs are introduced in the present tense. Simple grammatical structures are practiced in innovative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind. The course has been aligned to meet course standards.

Building on the student’s knowledge, the course will further the student’s proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening to French. Students will learn the grammar, vocabulary, and cultural information necessary to communicate about events in the past and present. The main goal of this course is for students to develop, on a daily basis, receptive and productive skills that will allow them to communicate efficiently in French. Through age- and stage-appropriate thematic topics for French 2 such as: daily greetings, family, friends, leisure/hobbies, shopping and restaurants and authentic resources such as songs, movies and documentaries related to French culture, students learn to create more complex sentences using different tenses and moods (present, past tense, subjunctive present, conditional), when writing in short paragraphs and speaking and writing, they will comprehend important ideas and details in contextualized texts and become more accurate in written and oral expression.

In French 3 students learn about French culture and literature while expanding on communication topics and situations as they read short stories and poems. Students continue to develop their proficiency in speaking, listening, writing and reading by interacting with other speakers of French. Students will understand oral and written messages in the target language and will make level appropriate oral and written presentations. Students communicate on a variety of topics using complex structures, moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. They will comprehend the main ideas of authentic materials that they read and hear and are able to identify significant details when topics are familiar.

Students are able to engage in conversation and comprehend another person’s dialogue without much repetition. Topics go well beyond basic needs and include personal and family affairs, current events, school, work, etc. Students can comprehend descriptions and narration referring to past, present, or future events. They can comprehend dialogue about special fields of interest and narratives of a non-technical or specialized nature. When listening to material restricted mainly to vocabulary and structures studied in class, their comprehension appears to be on a near native-like level. There is an increased comprehension of in-depth material about special interest topics used in class. Grammar control includes all but the infrequently used and the most complex forms and word order problems.

This rigorous course is designed for a highly motivated language learner who has 3 to 5 years’ experience of French with an A average. It is taken in senior year and is the fourth course in a continuum of courses. The aim of the course is to help students reach a high degree of competence in the language as well as to explore different aspects of the culture of France and the French-speaking world over 2 years. The main objective of the course is to refine language acquisition and develop the four primary language skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in a variety of contexts and themes. Furthermore, the course aims to offer insight into the culture of French-speaking countries and reinforces internationalism. It is offered to IB French level 2 and AP French 4 students.

The main objective of the course is to refine language acquisition and develop the four primary language skills, Listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in a variety of contexts and themes. Furthermore, the course aims to offer insight into the culture of French speaking countries and reinforces internationalism. It is offered to IB French level 1 and Pre AP French 3 students.

The purpose of this requirement is to encourage and facilitate language study at the post- secondary level, to promote tolerance and cultural awareness, and to prepare students to enter the international community of professionals. The course focuses on language acquisition and development in the four primary language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will communicate freely in speech and writing and will evaluate and respond to written texts on a wide range of subject matter. These language skills will be developed through the study and use of a range of both written and spoken material. Material will consist of a wide range of experience covering everyday oral exchanges to literary texts. Furthermore, the material will be closely related to the cultures concerned in order to enhance the international perspective of the program. Students will demonstrate competence in three distinct but interrelated areas.

The main objective of the course is to refine language acquisition and develop the four primary language skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational modes of communication in a variety of contexts and themes. Furthermore, the course aims to offer insight into the culture of French-speaking countries and reinforces internationalism. It is offered to IB French Level 1 and Pre AP French 3 students.

This focuses on the lexicon, grammar, syntax, and both the manual and non-manual production of ASL as it relates to the community and culture of the deaf. Introductory level receptive and expressive skills will be developed through a variety of instructional activities. Emphasis will be placed on expression in the target language in order to enhance student’s conversational sign language skills. ASL fulfills the foreign language requirement.

Students will continue to learn about the language and cultural views of the deaf community as well as an introduction to ASL Literature. Intermediate level receptive and expressive skills will be developed through a variety of instructional activities. Emphasis will be placed in the target language in order to enhance student’s production and understanding of signed descriptions and directions based on a variety of conversational topics. ASL fulfills the foreign language requirement.

In American Sign Language 3 students will expand expressive and receptive signed vocabulary, utilize correct grammatical features of American Sign Language, increase knowledge of deaf cultural behaviors, values, and norms, and increase visual perception, visual memory, signed fluency, and length of signed interactions. ASL fulfills the foreign language requirement.

This course studies the structure, vocabulary, and conversational strategies of American Sign Language as it is used within the Deaf culture. This course furthers students' conceptual understanding of American Sign Language linguistics by introducing more complex vocabulary and idioms. Students will also be exposed to more diversity within the community as subcultures are introduced.
